I am big, no two ways about it, always have been…BUT I have found a way to quieten the shame, to accept who I am and to transform the past labels and struggles into HEALTH
Once, all I cared about was being thin – this over-value on appearance being a constant stick to beat myself with.
Now I care about feeling SANE, WHOLE, FIT, STRONG and WELL! So I am on a journey to help other people whilst helping myself.
I’ve been to so many classes and gyms and felt so ashamed of myself, surrounded by thin, fit people that I was always destined to fail. Not everyone wants or can manage to join a high-impact Zumba or Clubbercise class, fun and exhilarating as they may be!
Big Beats is my way of doing this. It is about helping other people, big, or otherwise, to make friends with their bodies – to mix dancing and meditation in a non-judgemental setting through the Ecstatic Awakening Dance™ method to transform mind, body and spirit.
What is Big Beats?
Big Beats is more than a dance meditation class – it’s a movement Movement!!!
It is designed to be inclusive to all, regardless of size, fitness level, age or gender. I especially want to encourage people with body image issues, low self-confidence and self-esteem to participate in physical exercise, in the form dance meditation for both physical and emotional health. This is especially important to me because of my own body-issues and how much this dance practice has helped my fitness and self-esteem.
What happens in a class?
The classes follow a 5-step facilitated process from warm-up through to relaxation. A mixture of free-form dance, and deep relaxation is used.
Members are enabled to go with the flow of their own comfort and rhythm. No taught or partner dancing is involved.
We dance with our eyes closed to quiet the ‘chattering mind’, reduce self-consciousness, and encourage the dancer to drop into the music and the rhythm. When we are dancing, we are not thinking, and so meditation happens
Is this the right class for me?
Classes are designed to suit the pace and stamina levels of anyone as participants can move as much, or as little as they feel to. They are open classes, for anyone who loves to dance as a way of exercise and meditation combined.
The classes will help anyone who wishes to be more active in a free and fun way.
How much do the classes cost?
The classes are £10 for an 90 minute session. There is a 10% discount for those who pay in advance for 10 classes. I am happy to discuss your personal circumstances if you are on a low income.
What should I wear?
There are no rules! Be comfortable. Be bold. Be free.
Is this just for women?
No, men have body and confidence issues too, all are welcome. However, if you would like me to consider a single gender class, then let me know?
How do I find out about classes?
I use my Facebook page to advertise events.
I currently facilitate the Forest of Dean Monthly Moondance which runs with a prompt start from 19:00-20:30pm on the following evenings in 2017:-
